Protests, Protests, Everywhere

Visiting Israel during Passover, Easter and Ramadan, as protesters objecting to Netanyahu’s judicial reforms take to the streets for the 13th week – as Arab-Israelis clash with Israeli armed forces on the Temple Mount, I can’t help reflecting on the protests worldwide.

The protests that started in Hong Kong in 2019, over an extradition law that has since been withdrawn, have morphed and replicated globally. Protests, protests, everywhere, against the current political order of every political stripe and system, religion and race, demanding real change.

The protests in France, India, Israel, Russia, and across Africa, Asia, and Latin America taking place today, highlight people’s frustration about bread and butter issues. Pension reform, judicial reform, political reform, agrarian reform, racism, income inequality, health care, housing, war, climate change, and political corruption.

Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, black, brown, yellow and white protestors. Men, women LGBTQ, physically fit and handicapped. People everywhere. Not only demanding political change but tackling climate change.

A real New World Disorder. Time for change, real change. Locally and globally. Starting locally with basic human needs. Higher minimum wages, education, health care – and housing.

Globally, restructuring or abolishing the United Nations and replacing it with a global body relevant to today’s global needs for climate change and peace – locally and globally.

Amen.
