The highly anticipated testimony of former FBI Director James B. Comey about President Trump’s efforts, if any, to influence or quash FBI investigations of Trump associates Russian relationships – not to mention the charges and counter charges that will follow from the Trump and anti-Trump camps — are just the latest reminder of how dirty and dysfunctional Washington politics really are. They are a swamp that many presidents before Trump have tried unsuccessfully to drain and clean up.
America’s Founding fathers must be rolling in their graves. This is not the Republic they envisioned.
The “Deep” establishment government in the swamp is facing its biggest anti-establishment challenger yet. President Trump. Any wonder he is being attacked with a vengeance by all means and sides, some justified and some not?
Why is anyone then surprised that he is fighting back? That is what his supporters demand and expect. But who ultimately pays for this prime time political reality show? We the People!
The ongoing political battle between Trump and his detractors is political drama that America can ill-afford. In the meantime, health care, tax reform, jobs, infrastructure, education reform and foreign wars are languishing in the dysfunctional political swamp at the expense of the public. We the People! The maids who have been trying to clean the swamp and calling for it to be drained.
The Trump-Comey showdown is the beginning of the latest cleanup operation. The only question is who will be swept out of Washington? The establishment Comey represents or the anti-establishment camp that Trump represents?
My hunch is Trump has the upper and better hand. Comey was fired while he was in California – 3000 miles and seven hours from his office when he was fired. Trump’s letter firing Comey states that he was told three times by Comey that he (Trump) was not under investigation and had attached to it the recommendations of AG Sessions and Deputy AG that Comey be fired. The Department of Justice, with Attorney General Sessions at its head, seized everything in Comey’s office, including all surveillance tapes of Trump and others.
With frustrated and angry Americans glued to their political reality shows, Comey’s testimony will definitely be riveting. It shall be interesting to see if he had backup files that he removed for his office. A whole other swamp issue.
In the meantime, We the People, keep slowly drowning in the dysfunctional Washington swamp.
